A Message from Owner and Manager Tom Grable

"Hi, my name is Tom Grable. I'd like to tell you a little about myself and how I do business. I was raised in the Wolfdale area of Southwestern Pennsylvania. That's right outside Washington, PA. I have lived in the Washington, PA area for all my life. I started out in the construction business right out of high school, working part-time while I attended Waynesburg College. I later attended California and some classes from Washington and Jefferson.

I worked for my father's company for 18 years before deciding to start my own construction company. I have owned Tom Grable Construction for over 35 years. I was raised in the Presbyterian Church, and that contributed to my strong belief that I must be completely honest with my clients. My family, including my parents and a whole bunch of aunts and uncles, had a lot to do with that, also. Some of you that have been around long enough may remember one or more of the Grables, Eliza, Irene, Gertrude, or Glenna Smith who taught in the local schools all their lives. They were my aunts, and some of the best people I have ever known and we were very close. I don't want to forget my Aunt Virginia Grable who was the head laboratory technician at the Washington Hospital for over 40 years and my uncle Sherman Grable who was the head of the mathematics department at the University of Richmond as long as I can remember. They are all gone now, but there influence lives on here in my company.

All of my projects are done using the design-build method of project delivery. All are designed professionally by my architects and engineers. I found out a long time ago that I am not a professional designer, unlike a lot of small contractors out there who don't have any use for architects and engineers. This guarantees that everything is built correctly and to code or better. I have systems in place to assure this.

My process starts with an initial visit to find out what you would like built. Then, before we can design anything, we need to discuss and settle on a firm budget for the project and a time frame for the start and completion. From this first meeting, I will work up a preliminary estimate of the cost of your project. I do this from estimating manuals and experience. Then I usually add 10% or 15%to that figure to establish the preliminary figure. This is so that I don't have to raise the price later, hopefully. Once we have agreed on a preliminary price range, we sign the design agreement. This requires payment at signing and a final design payment when I come back with the final drawings, specifications and an exact price. The design process usually takes about six weeks or so. This method assures everything is decided and I have a well-defined project that eliminates any guesswork. Without the design process to define the project there is nothing definite to price.

From there, if everything is acceptable to the client, we go on to sign the construction contract with a down payment for the job. As the job progresses, payments are made at defined milestones indicated on a payment schedule until the project is completed.

I believe in being as honest as possible and keeping my clients well informed of anything related to the project as we move along. My job, as I see it, is to build your project the way you want it, on schedule, and on budget and to keep you informed on the process as it moves along.
